ACCOMPLISHED. I’M SURE THERE’S GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT
MORE POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE AROUND THIS RETIREMENT COMING. I JUST CAN’T PUSH THAT BUTTON WITHOUT AT LEAST
SAYING THANK YO U FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE THESE LAST FEW TE — THESE LAST FEW YEARS.>>I WOULD LIKE TO ECHO WHAT TRUSTEE MARTIN
SAID, BUT ALSO, DR. VERIDAN YOU CAME HERE AT A IMPORTANT TIME. YOU WILL CALL BUSH THINGS, INCLUDING GETTING

OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS. ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THE WAY

PRESENTATION. I AM GOING TO GO THROUGH A VERY BRIEF CHRONOLOGY,
AND THEY ARE PASSING OUT SOME PRINTED MATERIALS THAT HAVE BEEN PREPARED AND WILL BE THE MATERIALS,
AND THESE JUST CAME TO US YESTERDAY, SO YOU ARE ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE TO SEE THEM. THIS CAMPAIGN IDEA ACTUALLY STARTED IN ABOUT
2012, WHEN THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAD A STRATEGIC PLAN, AND IN 2013 APPROVED THAT PLAN TO BECOME
A FUND-RAISING ORGANIZATION AND LAUNCH A FUND-RAISING PROGRAM. IN 2014, UNDER THE INTERIM PCC PRESIDENT,
WE DID A FEASIBILITY STUDY, AND WE LOOKED AT WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, OUR TECHNOLOGY CONSORTIUM,
AND SCHOLARSHIP, AND WE GOT INFORMATION BACK THAT SHOWED THAT PCC WOULD BE VERY SUCCESSFUL
IN A MAJOR GIFT CAMPAIGN. IN 2015, WE HAD A CHANGE OF LEADERSHIP AT
THE COLLEGE, AND DR. VURDIEN STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE, AND WE REVIEWED
THE PRIORITIES,, AND ONE OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO MENTION IS THAT DURING THE TIME OF THE
GALA, WHEN YOU WERE THERE, WE HAD ALREADY DONE
THE FEASIBILITY STUDY. AND ANYTHING THAT WAS RAISED FROM THE GALA,
AFTER DR. VURDIEN CAME AND MADE HIS INAUGURAL ADDRESS,
THEY CREATED A FIVE-YEAR BUDGET SO WE COULD IDENTIFY IF WE WERE GOING TO GO INTO A MAJOR
CAMPAIGN, WHAT WOULD IT COST US AND WHAT WERE THE STEPS, AND JOHN GREGORY WAS PRESIDENT
AT THE TIME, AND ACCORDING TO HIS TENURE, WE DIVIDED THE FOUNDATION INTO GROUPS AND
IDENTIFIED WHITE PAPERS AND DRILLED DOWN VERY SPECIFICALLY — VERY SPECIFICALLY — SUCCINCTLY
WHAT WAS NEEDED, AND IT WAS APPROVED THAT WE WOULD
ENTER INTO A MAJOR GIFT CAMPAIGN. IN THE SPRING OF 2006, WE BEGAN DOING INTERVIEWS
FOR CONSULTANTS FOR THE CAMPAIGN, AND ARMISTEAD GROUP WAS CHOSEN. HE IS HERE TONIGHT, IN CASE YOU HAVE QUESTIONS,
AND THEN IN THE SUMMER OF 2016, JUNE, JIM BECAME PRESIDENT OF THE FOUNDATION, AND WE
BEGAN TO IDENTIFY THAN IT — WE KNEW WE HAD A BUDGET, BUT WE NEED TO IDENTIFY WHERE THE
FUNDING WAS ACTUALLY GOING TO COME FROM, AND WEEP TOGETHER A PROPOSAL AT THAT TIME AND
BROUGHT IT TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND YOU APPROVED AT THAT TIME — AND WE PUT TOGETHER
A PROPOSAL AT THAT TIME AND BROUGHT IT TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND YOU APPROVED IT
AT THAT TIME. DR. JACK AGREED TO BE THE GENERAL CAMPAIGN CHAIR,
AND THEN, OF COURSE, IN SPRING 2017, WE CAME TO YOU AND ASKED ABOUT THE BUDGET AGAIN. THAT IS WHEN WE HIRED A CAMPAIGN MARKETING
GROUP THAT HELPED PUT THESE MATERIALS TOGETHER, AND NOW WE HAVE A BUDGET FOR 2017. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THAT HAPPENED AT THE LAST MEETING. AND THEN THE CAMPAIGN MATERIALS ARRIVED JUST
YESTERDAY, SO THAT BRINGS US UP-TO-DATE REALLY QUICKLY ON HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHAT IT TOOK
TO GET US TO THIS POINT. ONE OF THE BIGGEST QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
IS WHAT IS THE GOAL GOING TO BE, AND ARE FEASIBILITY STUDY SHOWED WE HAD THE ABILITY TO RAISE BETWEEN
$10 MILLION AND $20,000, AND ACCORDING TO THE RECOMMENDATION OF NOT ONLY THE BOARD,
BUT TYPICALLY YOU DO NOT ANNOUNCE IT UNTIL YOU HAVE MADE SOME OF YOUR VERY STRATEGIC,
HIGH-LEVEL ASKS , AND THAT WILL TYPICALLY SET THE PACE IN A STRATEGIC DIRECTION. WE HAD THOSE ASKS SCHEDULED TO THIS FALL. UNTIL THAT HAPPENS, WE PROBABLY WILL NOT COME
OUT PUBLICLY WITH ANY KIND OF GOAL, BUT WE FEEL COMFORTABLY THAT IT IS VERY DOABLE, SO
I WOULD ANTICIPATE THE NUMBER WOULD BE SOMEWHERE AROUND THERE, AND TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON
WHERE WE ARE, WE ARE ACTUALLY AT A LITTLE OVER $6 MILLION RIGHT NOW IN CASH, BUDGET,
AND PLANNED GIFTS, AND MOST OF THAT MONEY IS IN CASH, AND MOST OF IT AT — MOST OF IT
IS AT THE FOUNDATION ARE READY. WE PROBABLY HAVE PROBABLY $200,000 IN PLEDGES. AND I WOULD LIKE TO JUST SEE IF JIM WOULD
LIKE TO MAKE SOME COMMENTS. JIM: GOOD EVENING, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF
TRUSTEES, AND DR. VURDIEN, AND OTHERS. I PROMISED THAT I WOULD KEEP MY REMARKS TO
ONE HOUR. I IN HERE TO REPRESENT THE FOUNDATION AND
SAY THAT WE ARE 100% BEHIND THIS EFFORT. I HAVE BEEN PERSONALLY INVOLVED. THIS IS MY FOURTH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, SO I KNOW
WHAT WE ARE IN FOR. IT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION THERE IS PROBABLY
NO MORE CRITICAL TIME IN CERTAINLY THE COLLEGE HISTORY OR THE CITY HISTORY OR THE NATION
TO EMBARK ON A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LIKE THIS, AND WHILE THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES IN LIFE,
AS WE ALL KNOW, THERE IS ONE THING I AM VERY SURE OF, AND THAT IS THE VERY SUCCESS OF THIS
CAMPAIGN, AND THAT IS BECAUSE OF THE MAN WHO HAS AGREED TO CHAIR THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN,
AND THE MAN WHO NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION IS DR. JACK. WHEN I ASKED HIM AT THAT FATEFUL DAY IN MY
OFFICE IF YOU WOULD CONSIDER CHAIRING THE CAMPAIGN, I ASSURED HIM HE WAS NOT GOING TO
BE IN THIS ALONE, AND HE IS NOT GOING TO BE IN IT ALONE, BUT IT IS UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP
THAT WE WILL BE A SUCCESS. DR. SCOTT, WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME UP? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. DR. SCOTT: WELL, AS ALL OF YOU KNOW, SPENDING
BEFORE THE PASADENA CITY COLLEGE TRUSTEES IS NOT UNFAMILIAR TO ME. I WAS PRIVILEGED TO SERVE AS PRESIDENT HERE
FROM 1987 UNTIL 1995, AND THOSE WERE DELIGHTFUL YEARS IN MY LIFE. I LOOK BACK ON IT WITH A LOT OF PRIDE AND
A LOT OF ENJOYMENT, AND I EVEN SEE ONE FAMILIAR FACE ON THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. JOHN MARTIN WAS HERE WHEN I CAME, AND HE CONTINUED
AND DID A SUPERB JOB THEN, AND I AM SURE HE IS DOING A SUPERB JOB NOW. I WAS PRIVILEGED TO WORK WITH A BOARD OF TRUSTEES
WHO WERE EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE AND WHO WERE CERTAINLY GOOD IN GIVING DIRECTION AS FAR
AS POLICY OF THE COLLEGE WAS CONCERNED. AS YOU KNOW, AFTER I SERVED HERE, I WENT TO
THE LEGISLATURE FOR 12 YEARS, AND THEN AS SOMEBODY SAID, I FAILED RETIREMENT TWICE AND
BECAME THE CHANCELLOR OF CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND I HAD A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
COLLEGES , AND WHAT A GREAT INSTITUTION THE COLLEGES ARE AND PARTICULARLY THE CITY COLLEGE. WHEN I THINK ABOUT THE TRANSFORMATION OF LIVES,
WHEN I THINK OF THEM — MANY OF THEM ARE FIRST GENERATION FIRST IN THEIR FAMILY, TO GO TO
COLLEGE, AND SUDDENLY, THEY ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY EITHER TO GET A TRANSFER DEGREE
AND MOVE ON TO A SENIOR INSTITUTION OR PREPARE THEMSELVES IN CAREER AND TECHNICAL PROGRAMS
— IT IS JUST A GREAT, GREAT WORK THAT THEY DO, AND I COMPLEMENT THIS BOARD OF TRUSTEES
OR THE FACT THAT YOU ARE VOLUNTARILY GIVING YOUR SERVICE, THAT YOU CARE ENOUGH ABOUT THE
EDUCATION OF I STARTED TO SAY YOUTH, BUT SO MANY OF THOSE WHO ATTEND PASADENA CITY COLLEGE
ARE ADULT, AND THEY KNOW THIS IS THE PLACE THEY CAN RECEIVE ADDITIONAL EDUCATION. WHEN I WAS PRESIDENT HERE, I WAS IMPRESSED
WITH THE FOUNDATION. WE STRENGTHENED THE FOUNDATION, AND THE FOUNDATION
WAS SUCCESSFUL IN ENRICHING THE LIFE OF THE COLLEGE. DURING MY TENURE, WE RAISED ABOUT $10 MILLION. WE WERE ABLE TO IMPROVE THE THINGS IN THE
LIBRARY AT THE STATE DID NOT FINANCE. WE WERE ABLE TO DO THE SAME THING OVER IN
THE ATHLETIC AREA. WE WERE ACTUALLY ABLE TO GET THE GIFT OF THE
CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER, AND SO I LOOK BACK ON THOSE YEARS. WHEN I WAS ASKED TO JOIN THE FOUNDATION AFTER
MY RETIREMENT, I WAS VERY WILLING TO DO SO, AND THEN THEY SURPRISED ME BY SAYING WE WANT
YOU TO HEAD UP THIS CAMPAIGN. WELL, AS COLLEGE PRESIDENT AND AS SOMEONE
WHO SOUGHT PUBLIC OFFICE, I AT LEAST HAVE A LITTLE EXPERIENCE OF ASKING PEOPLE FOR MONEY,
SO I WILL CONTINUE THAT. I HAVE ALREADY BEEN INVOLVED IN TALKING PARTICULARLY
TO MEMBERS OF THE FOUNDATION BOARD, BECAUSE THAT IS THE FIRST STEP WE ARE TAKING, IS TO
MAKE SURE WE HAVE 100% PARTICIPATION BY OUR FOUNDATION BOARD, AND, INCIDENTALLY, I WILL
SIMPLY SAY IT WILL BE NICE TO SEE 100% PARTICIPATION BY THIS BOARD OF TRUSTEES. THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL
TO THE CAMPAIGN. WHAT IS THIS CAMPAIGN ABOUT QUESTION MARK
WELL, IT IS ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS, FOR ONE THING. YOU TOOK THE VERY BOLD STEP OF THE PROMISE. YOU SAID, IN EFFECT, THAT ANY STUDENT WHO
GRADUATES FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND COMES TO PASADENA CITY COLLEGE, IF THEY DO NOT GET THEIR TUITION
PAID FOR THROUGH OTHER MEANS THAT YOU WILL PAY FOR THEIR TUITION. TUITION-FREE EDUCATION FOR EVERY HIGH SCHOOL
GRADUATE IN THIS AREA, AND THE FOUNDATION IS THE ONE THAT IS GOING TO PROVIDE THE FUNDS
FOR THAT, SO SCHOLARSHIP. THAT IS PART OF OUR CAMPAIGN. CAREER IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION. I THINK OF THAT AS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT
THINGS COMMUNITY COLLEGES DO. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT ALL OF THOSE MIDDLE-SKILLS
JOBS, AS THEY ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO, WHICH DO NOT REQUIRE A FOUR-YEAR DEGREE OR A GRADUATE
DEGREE , BUT IT DOES REQUIRE SOMETHING BEYOND A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THOSE THAT BECOME NURSES. THOSE THAT BECOME AUTO TECHNICIANS, INDIVIDUALS
WHO THINK TO THE EYE DENTAL HYGIENIST OR A FIREFIGHTER, AND I COULD GO — WHO THINK TO
BECOME A DENTAL HYGIENIST OR A FIREFIGHTER, AND I COULD GO ON AND ON. YOU KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT COMMUNITY COLLEGE FINANCE
THAT THOSE INDIVIDUALS — WE ONLY GET THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY WHETHER ONE MAJORS IN
PSYCHOLOGY OR MAJORS IN NURSING, BUT I CAN TELL YOU AS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS A COLLEGE BUDGET,
IT IS FAR MORE EXPENSIVE TO EDUCATE SOMEONE IN NURSING THAN IT IS SOMEONE IN PSYCHOLOGY,
SO WE NEED EQUIPMENT, AND THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS WE WILL DO. AND THEN WE LOOKED AT THE
AREAS OF BOTH ART, AND, AFTER ALL, THIS IS THE CENTER OF ENTERTAINMENT AND ART IN THE
WHOLE NATION, AND ATHLETICS, AND THE FOOTBALL FIELD HAS TO HAVE SOME REDOING, AND THE STATE
OF CALIFORNIA DOES NOT TAKE CARE OF FOOTBALL FIELDS, AND SO WE ARE GOING TO RAISE THIS
MONEY NOT NEEDLESSLY. IT IS GOING TO BE USED TO REALLY EDUCATE THE
STUDENTS OF PASADENA CITY COLLEGE. IT IS A MAJOR GIFTS CAMPAIGN. MANY TIMES YOU ARE INVOLVED IN RAISING MONEY
FOR A BUILDING, AND, PERHAPS, IN THE FUTURE, YOU MAY WANT TO SEEK A BOND FOR OR CAPITAL
EXPANSION ON THE CAMPUS, BUT WE NEED EQUIPMENT. WE NEED SCHOLARSHIPS. SO I AM SO PLEASED THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
HAS BEEN ENTHUSIASTICALLY SUPPORTING THIS CAMPAIGN, AND WE ASK FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT,
AND WE ARE ALSO HERE, BY THE WAY, TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE. IF I DO NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS, I CAN CALL ON
SOME PEOPLE HERE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTION, BUT THAT WILL TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE
CAMPAIGN OF THE PCC FOUNDATION.>>TRUSTEE BROWN. MS. BROWN: THIS IS NOT A QUESTION. THIS IS A COMMENT OF HOW HAPPY WE ARE. I KNOW I IN PARTICULAR, AND VERY HAPPY TO
SEE THAT YOU WILL COME OUT OF RETIREMENT TO REALLY COME AND HELP PASADENA CITY COLLEGE. IT SHOWS THE LOVE THAT YOU HAVE FOR THIS COMMUNITY,
AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT AND WILL DEFINITELY WORK TO SUPPORT IN ANY WAY WE CAN. DR. SCOTT: THANK YOU, AND I APPRECIATE THAT COMPLEMENT,
BUT I JUST BELONG REALLY STRONGLY IN PASADENA CITY COLLEGE AND WHAT IT DOES, AND I HAVE
BEEN VERY PRIVILEGED, OF COURSE, TO GET A COLLEGE EDUCATION, AND SOME GRADUATE EDUCATION,
AS WELL, BUT I AM THRILLED. WHEN I WAS HERE AS PRESIDENT, I WALKED OUT
ON CAMPUS AND SAW THOSE STUDENTS, SO I THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE CAMPAIGN.>>TRUSTEE WAH. TRUSTEE WAH: IN THE YEARS I HAVE BEEN ON THIS
BOARD, THERE HAS BEEN TREMENDOUS GROWTH, AND YOU HAVE DONE IN OUTSTANDING JOB. I AM SURE BOBBY MIGHT KNOW IT IS COMING, BUT
I KNOW WE TALK ABOUT RAISING FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIP. AS YOU KNOW, I HAVE BEEN A BIG PROPONENT OF
ALSO USING MONEY TO HELP FIND INTERNSHIPS, NOT JUST SCHOLARSHIP, AND I THINK WITH THE
STATE INITIATIVE AND HAVING APPLIED LEARNING THROUGH WORK, I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT, AND
I THINK IT IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR THIS FOUNDATION TO PARTNER AND TO MAKE SURE IT
IS ONE OF THE SUCCESS COMPONENTS.>>AND THAT CAME OUT QUITE STRONGLY IN OUR
FEASIBILITY STUDY, SO THAT IS PART OF THE CT E PART OF THIS CAMPAIGN.>>TRUSTEE MILLER? TRUSTEE: I HAVE ALWAYS HAD GREAT RESPECT FOR
YOU. YOU MAY NOT KNOW, BUT AT ONE TIME, I HAD A
WHISPER CAMPAIGN FOR YOU TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR. ASKING MY WIFE, BECAUSE SHE IS VERY ACTIVE
IN THE FOUNDATION. IS THIS JUST GOING TO BE AN ASKING CAMPAIGN,
OR ARE YOU PLANNING ANOTHER MAJOR EVENT, WHICH WAS THE BEST EVENT I ATTENDED?>>IT DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH MONEY WE RAISE,
I THINK. I THINK THAT GALA WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY
CAREER. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE PLANET, AND NANCY WAS
THERE HE INSTRUMENTAL IN THAT AND CONTINUES TO HELP US. IN THE BACK OF MY MIND, WHEN PCC BECOMES 95
YEARS OLD, THAT MIGHT BE THE TIME WHEN THIS CAMPAIGN CONCLUDES. I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO SAVE MY ENERGY FOR
THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS COLLEGE, AND I KNOW I AM ON RECORD, AND IN PUBLIC, AND
ALL OF THAT, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO FINISH THIS CAMPAIGN, CELEBRATE IT, CLOSE IT DOWN, AND
THEN START A CAMPAIGN LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN TO HAPPEN EVENT TO COINCIDE WITH THE
100 YEARS. A LOT OF THIS CAMPAIGN IS HELPING US GET OUR
PROCESSES IN PLACE, OUR STAFFING IN PLACE. ONE OF THE REASON WHY THE ARMISTEAD GROUP
WAS CHOSEN IS BECAUSE HE MENTORS OUR STAFF, AND HE HELPED GROW THE STAFF AND TRAIN US
TO HANDLE WHAT GOES THROUGH A CAMPAIGN. WE HAVE SOME OTHER OPPORTUNITIES WITH OTHER
CONSULTANTS THAT COST QUITE A BIT MORE MONEY, BUT THE FOUNDATION BOARD DECIDED WE WOULD
GROW OUR OWN, BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING REALLY FOR THAT 100TH YEAR. DR. SCOTT: WELL, DR. FELLOWS, I APPRECIATE YOUR WHISPERING CAMPAIGN,
AND I CANNOT HELP BUT TELL YOU A STORY FROM MY CAMPAIGN DAYS. I WAS RATHER FORTHRIGHT AND CANDID, AND A
WOMAN CAME UP AND SAID, “OH, YOU WERE SO CANDID IN YOUR REMARKS, YOU SHOULD RUN FOR GOVERNOR,”
AND I SAID, “MA’AM, ONE OF THE REASONS I WAS CANDID IN MY REMARKS IS THAT I AM NOT RUNNING
FOR GOVERNOR.” TRUSTEE: I JUST WANT TO REINFORCE THE COMMENTS
FROM DR. SCOTT AND TRUSTEE WAH. WITH THE TECHNICAL EDUCATION, AS DOCTORS GOT
POINTED OUT, THOSE COURSES TEND TO COST MORE PER CREDIT HOUR BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT AND OTHER
NEEDS, AND THE WHITE PAPER THAT THE CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE ISSUED STATED THAT 47% OF ALL OF THE
JOBS HERE IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA ARE WHAT DR. SCOTT REFERRED TO AS MID-SKILL JOBS, AND WE
HAVE PERFECTLY POSITIONED OURSELVES AND ALL OF THE COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO PROVIDE THE EDUCATION
FOR THOSE MID-SKILL JOBS, AND THE FUNDING FROM THE STATE IS SHORT FOR THAT, SO I WOULD
JUST REINFORCE THAT THAT WOULD BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE CAMPAIGN, AND I THINK THAT WILL
RESONATE WELL WITH OUR DONOR BASE. THANK YOU. DR. SCOTT: I AGREE WITH YOU. ONE OF THE THINGS WE WILL DO IN THIS CAMPAIGN
IS GIVE PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PARTICULAR PART OF THAT CAMPAIGN THAT
THEY ARE MOST INTERESTED IN, AND WE ARE ALREADY FUNDING. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GOING OUT TO THE AUTOMOBILE
INDUSTRY — THE CORPORATE WORLD UNDERSTANDS, FOR INSTANCE, THE VALUE OF CAREER TECHNICAL
EDUCATION, SO WE ARE GOING TO MAKE THAT, CERTAINLY, VERY CENTRAL IN THIS CAMPAIGN. TRUSTEE: THANK YOU.>>TRUSTEE MARTIN? TRUSTEE MARTIN: SOMEONE SAID I HAVE BAD NEWS
ABOUT THE AGENDA AND GOOD NEWS ABOUT THE AGENDA, THAT DR. VU RDIEN IS RETIRING AND DR. SCOTT
IS COMING. DR. SCOTT: [CHUCKLES]>>IS IT STILL APPROPRIATE TO IDENTIFY YOU
AS SENATOR SCOTT? DR. SCOTT: YOU COULD CALL ME THAT, BUT JACK IS
FINE.>>I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE
OVER THE YEARS. YOU HAVE MADE QUITE A NAME FOR YOURSELF WITH
ALL OF YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS. THE MID-1990’S AND THE LEGISLATURE. YOU WERE MY ASSEMBLYMAN AND SENATOR AND ALL
OF THAT. THANKS A LOT. I REALLY APPRECIATE THE EMPHASIS ON
THE EDUCATIONAL ASPECT.>>DR. VURDIEN? DR. VURDIEN: WE APPRECIATE THE WORK YOU HAVE BEEN
DOING, AND WE WILL BRING FOR THE NEXT MEETING THE SUPPORT FOR THE MAJOR CAMPAIGN THAT THE
FOUNDATION IS LAUNCHING TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS AT PASADENA CITY COLLEGE, SO WE WILL HAVE
A RESOLUTION FOR THE BOARD AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING TO SUPPORT THAT. DR. SCOTT: THAT WILL BE VERY IMPORTANT AS WE GO
FORWARD, TO BE ABLE TO SAY THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE PASADENA CITY COLLEGE ARE
SOLIDLY BEHIND THIS CAMPAIGN. DR. VURDIEN: WE WANT TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN, AND
WE THANK YOU AGAIN. [APPLAUSE]>>INFORMATION ITEM? NO. THE FIRST ITEM THAT WAS ON THE CONSENT CALENDAR
THAT WAS REQUESTED THAT WE DISCUSSED SEPARATELY IS ITEM F-10, THE OPPORTUNITY TO BID THE FAB
LAB RENOVATION.>>I JUST WANT TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT
WHAT THE FAB LAB IS.>>EXCUSE ME. WE NEED A MOTION FIRST.>>WE HAVE A MOTION. NO, I WILL MOVE.>>OK, TRUSTEE MARTIN. TRUSTEE: COULD SOMEONE JUST GIVE ME — IT
SOUNDS LIKE IT IS A LITTLE MORE ROBUST THAN A HAC K-A-THON. I WOULD LIKE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND FAB LAB. DR. VURDIEN: I’M GOING TO ASK SOMEONE TO ADDRESS
THAT.>>SO IT BASICALLY STANDS FOR FABRICATION,
AND IT IS A MAKER SPACE. YOU HAVE PROBABLY HEARD ABOUT THAT TERM, AND,
IN FACT, WE TALKED ABOUT THAT AT A PRIOR BOARD MEETING, AND MAKER SPACES CAN SUPPORT DIFFERENT
AREAS. OUR FAB LA B IS MOSTLY IN SUPPORT OF THINGS
IN DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY , THINGS OF THAT NATURE. THERE IS CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT — THERE IS A
CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF EQUIPMENT IN THERE, 3-D PRINTERS, LASER CUTTERS, COMPUTERS THAT
OBVIOUSLY RUN THOSE AND THOSE THAT HAVE SOFTWARE ON THEM SO STUDENTS CAN RUN THINGS ON THE
COMPUTER AND TEST THEM BEFORE THEY MAKE PROTOTYPES IN THE LAB, SO IT SUPPORTS MANY OF THE CLASSES
IN THE ENGINEERING TECH PROGRAM. WE ARE ACTUALLY IN THE PROCESS OF EXPANDING
THE PROGRAMS THAT USE IT, SO WE ARE REACHING OUT TO THE AREAS OF ART AND STEM TO ALLOW
STUDENTS IN THOSE AREAS TO ACTUALLY USE IT, SO IT IS USED BOTH FOR CLASSES THAT THEY ARE
NOT SCHEDULED IN THERE, BUT OUR STUDENTS GO THERE TO WORK ON PROJECTS. THEY MIGHT DO SOME OF THAT DURING CLASS TIME,
BUT THEY DO THAT AFTER HOURS, AS WELL, AND THEN IT IS ALSO USED TO ALLOW STUDENTS, AND
THE IDEA OF A MAKER SPACE REALLY, WHICH WE ARE NOT TO YET, BUT MAKER SPACES THROUGHOUT
THE STATE, THE IDEA IS TO HAVE THEM OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY TO ALLOW THE COMMUNITY TO COME
IN AND DO THE VARIOUS WORK THAT THAT MIGHT SUPPORT. WE ARE NOT THERE YET. WE ARE NOT SURE IT WILL BE OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY. AT THIS POINT, IT IS JUST OPEN TO THE STUDENTS
OF PASADENA CITY COLLEGE, SO THE HOURS ARE MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. AND SO, WHAT THE PROPOSAL IS ON YOUR AGENDA
BASICALLY IS FOR US TO GO OUT FOR A BID TO I WILL SAY WHETHER THEY BE SPACE, BUT THE
RENOVATION IS ACTUALLY FAIRLY MINIMAL. IT IS REALLY TO UPGRADE THE EQUIPMENT IN THERE. THAT ROOM, AND I INVITE YOU TO TOUR IT, IS,
BASICALLY, THERE ARE THREE SPACES IN THAT ROOM NOW. THERE IS THE FAB LAB, WHICH YOU WALK INTO. THERE IS A COMPUTER LAB BETWEEN AND THEN THE
TOOL SPACE IN THE BACK. WHAT THE RENOVATION IS GOING TO DO IS PULL
MORE POWER INTO THAT ROOM SO WE CAN UPGRADE THE EQUIPMENT AND ADD MORE EQUIPMENT. THE MACHINE TOOL AREA, YOU WILL SEE THAT. YOU WILL SEE THAT IS FAIRLY OUTDATED, AND
SO THAT WILL BE UPDATED WITH MORE CURRENT MACHINE TOOL TYPE EQUIPMENT. THE COMPUTERS WILL BE MOVED TO ALLOW MORE
SPACE, TO EXPAND BOTH THE MACHINE TOOL AREA AND THE FAB LAB AREA, AND AS I MENTIONED,
WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF EXPANDING THE PROGRAMS THAT UTILIZE THAT SPACE, BECAUSE RIGHT NOW,
IT IS BASICALLY THE ENGINEERING TECH PROGRAM, BUT WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE OTHERS. I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT HELPED. TRUSTEE MARTIN: IT JUST EXCITES ME MORE. EVERY NOW AND AGAIN, WE NEED TO HIGHLIGHT
THE WONDERFUL THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING, SO THANK YOU. THAT WAS A GREAT DESCRIPTION.>>SO THE RENOVATION OF IT IS BEING FUNDED
BY ONE OF THE GRANTS WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. WE ARE ALSO IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CAL STATE
L.A., AND THEY ARE DEVELOPING A FAB LAB THAT WILL BE MODELED AFTER HOURS, SO THERE WILL
BE A CONNECTION BETWEEN — BETWEEN PCC A CAL STATEN L.A., AND WE ARED REALLY EXCITED ABOUT
THE FACT THAT WE BELIEVE THAT ONCE THIS PROJECT IS COMPLETE THAT THE FAB LAB AT PASADENA CITY
COLLEGE WILL BE A MAKER SPACE THAT WILL BE LOOKED AT THROUGHOUT THE STATE, AND THERE
ARE MANUFACTURERS WHO WILL BE DONATING SOME INCREMENT FOR FREE TO THE UNDERSTANDING THAT
THEY THEN CAN SHOW IT OFF WHEN THEY ARE TRYING TO GET OTHERS TO BUY THEIR EQUIPMENT.>>TRUSTEE WAH? TRUSTEE WAH: YES, WE HAD A MEETING WITH THE
SUPERINTENDENT’S — SUPERINTENDENT, AND I REALLY THANK YOU FOR YOUR INVITATION THAT
WE ALL ASK FOR EIGHT-HOUR — FOR A TOUR, AND THAT WE MIGHT HAVE AN OPEN HOUSE AND INVITE
PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY TO SEE THIS, BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR THE TRUSTEES
AND THE SUPERINTENDENTS TO SEE THIS , IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT FOR THE COMMUNITY TO SEE THIS
AND HOW IT IS PROMOTING WHAT IS BEST FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND I ALSO APPRECIATE IT THAT WE
FORMED A STRONG PARTNERSHIP WITH CAL STATE L.A., WHICH IS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART. THANK YOU.>>AND IF I COULD ADD ONE OTHER COMMENT, IN
REGARD TO INTERACTION WITH THE COMMUNITY, SOME OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IS THERE IS A COMMUNITY
GROUP OF CODERS THAT WE ARE WORKING WITH TO DO HACK -A-THONS,
WHICH WE HOPE WILL DRAW THE COMMUNITY IN AND PUT PCC IN A GOOD LIFE WITH SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,
ENGINEERING, MATH, AND ART — IN A GOOD LIGHT WITH SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATH,
AND ART.>>THE
MOTION PASSES, 6-0, WITH ONE ABSENCE. THE ADVISORY VOTE. NOW, WE WILL GO TO WHAT HAS BEEN CONSENT ITEM
F-13, A CONTRACT FOR ARMEN SARAFIAN BUILDING. THERE HAS BEEN A MOTION TO APPROVE AND A SECOND. ANY QUESTIONS? TRUSTEE MARTIN? TRUSTEE MARTIN: WELL, FIRST OFF, SIMILAR TO
THE LAST ITEM, EVERY NOW AND THEN, I THINK THERE IS AN ITEM THAT NEEDS TO BE PULLED JUST
TO HIGHLIGHT IT FOR THE PUBLIC, AND IF THERE WAS AN ITEM IN THIS YEAR THAT WOULD ACCOUNT
FOR THAT, I WOULD THINK IT IS THE SELECTION OF THE ARCHITECT FOR THE NEW U BUILDING REPLACEMENT. OBVIOUSLY, THAT U BUILDING HAS BEEN OUT OF
COMMISSION FOR YEARS. THE MILLIONS IS A BIG DEAL, BUT THIS FIRM
IS GOING TO BE LEADING THIS PROJECT FOR MANY YEARS TO COME, AND I DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY
MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THE U BUILDING REPLACEMENT IS, BUT IT IS TREMENDOUSLY SIGNIFICANT. FIRST, I THINK IT IMPORTANT THAT IT NOT BE
LOST. IT NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT OUT AND HIGHLIGHTED,
SO MY QUESTIONS THAT I AM ABOUT TO ASK ARE MORE SIMILAR TO FAB LAB OUT OF MY EXCITEMENT
THAT WE ARE TAKING A MONUMENT TO STEP — A MONUMENTAL STEP AND NOT REALLY ANY KIND OF
DISPARAGING THOUGHTS TO THE FIRM WE SELECTED. IN THE LAST 10 TO 20 YEARS, I HAVE HAD THE
OPPORTUNITY IN MY PERSONAL WORK EXPERIENCE TO BE PART OF TEAMS THAT HAVE BUILT GYMNASIUMS
AND MORE, AND I REALIZE PROBABLY MOST SIGNIFICANT DECISION WE MADE IN THOSE WAS THE SELECTION
OF THE ARCHITECT, AND I ALSO REALIZE THAT THE SELECTION OF AN ARCHITECT MORE THAN ANY
OTHER IS LEFT BRAIN/RIGHT BRAIN, ART AND SCIENCE COMING TOGETHER, AND THERE IS EVEN SOME PERSONALITY
IN HOW THIS FIRM CAN WORK AS A TEAM WITH THE TEAM FROM PCC AND IN PARTICULAR, LOOKING AT
DR. VURDIEN AND THE TEAM, A TREMENDOUS RESPONSIBILITY
IN ALL OF THE MANY THINGS THAT COME TOGETHER, SO I HAD TRIED TO SEND AHEAD A FEW QUESTIONS
TO PREPARE YOU THAT I THOUGHT THE PUBLIC NEEDED TO HEAR, AND I AM CERTAINLY INTERESTED IN
HEARING WHY WE SELECTED THIS PARTICULAR FIRM. IT IS GOOD TO KNOW HOW MANY OTHER KINDS OF
BUILDINGS SIMILAR TO OURS HAVE BEEN DONE, WHAT YOU FOUND ROSE THEM TO THE TOP OVER THE
OTHER REPRESENTATIVES, OF COURSE, WITHOUT NAMING ANY OTHER NAMES. IT WOULD JUST BE GOOD TO GET A GENTLE REMINDER,
AT LEAST FOR ME, THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SQUARE FOOTAGE AND SOME OF THE PARAMETERS WE HAVE
ASKED THESE PEOPLE TO DO AS SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF MAKING SURE THAT THEIR FINAL PRODUCT IS
NOT JUST A GREAT HEALTH BUILDING BUT THAT IT IS A GREAT BUILDING THAT IS CONNECTED TO
THE REST OF THE CAMPUS AND A WAY THAT ALSO REFLECTS OUT TO THE COMMUNITY, SO ALL OF THAT
IS GOING TO BE FRONT AND CENTER ON THIS PARTICULAR FIRM, SO I THINK IT IS APPROPRIATE FOR TRUSTEES
TO ASK THOSE QUESTIONS OF YOU AND LET THE PUBLIC AS WELL AS THE TRUSTEES HEAR THE ANSWERS. DR. VURDIEN: WE WILL PROVIDE THE ANSWER TO THE
FIRST PART OF YOUR QUESTION, AND THEN WE WILL TURN IT OVER TO THE DOCTOR. IN THE SELECTION OF THE ARCHITECT, WE HAD
A SHARED GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL COMPRISED OF FACULTY, STAFF, AND MANAGEMENT. AN RFP WENT OUT, AND WE HAD CLOSE TO 15 FIRMS
THAT RESPONDED. THE COMMITTEE SCREENED THE APPLICANTS AND
INTERVIEWED 12 GROUPS. EIGHT FIRMS. OF THE 8, 3 WERE RECOMMENDED TO BE INTERVIEWED
TO BE INTERVIEWED — TO BE INTERVIEWED BY ME AND THE DOCTOR. THE WORK OF FIRMS HAVE BEEN DOING STATEWIDE,
NATIONWIDE, THE TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONS THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING, THE TYPE OF PRODUCTS THAT
THEY HAVE BEEN ERECTING AND PUTTING IN PLACE, AND FELT THAT THOSE THREE FIRMS SHOULD BE
FORWARDED TO BE INTERVIEWED BY THE COLLEGE PRESIDENT AND THE VICE PRESIDENT. WE MET WITH THE THREE FIRMS. WE HAD VERY LENGTHY CONVERSATIONS. WE HAD A SET OF QUESTIONS THAT WERE ASKED
OF EVERY SINGLE FIRM, AND WE LOOKED AGAIN AT THE WORK THAT THEY HAD DONE, VERY POINTED,
SPECIFIC QUESTIONS RELATED TO DESIGN, TO THEIR ABILITY TO WORK WITH COLLEGE FACULTY AND STAFF,
WE LOOKED AT THE NUMBER OF — AND THE TYPE OF BUILDINGS, AND IN OUR OPINION, BASED ON
EVERYTHING THAT WE HAD SEEN, BASED ON THE LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE, THE SIZE OF THE FIRM,
THE AVAILABILITY OF THEIR STAFF TO GET TO THE COLLEGE TO WORK WITH US, WE FELT THAT
THEY WERE THE TEAM THAT WOULD DO THE BEST JOB. WHAT ALSO ADDED, IF YOU WANT, THE EXTRA BOOST
THAT THEY HAD IS THAT THEY VERY RECENTLY AN EXACT A VERY SIMILAR BUILDING TWO HOURS AT
THE RIVERSIDE CITY COLLEGE THAT HOUSE EXACTLY THE SAME PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE AT THE COLLEGE,
AND THEY ALSO SHOWED US THE VARIATIONS OF DESIGNS THAT THEY WOULD DO DEPENDING ON THE
FOOTPRINT. AT RIVERSIDE CITY COLLEGE, THEY SHOWED US
THREE DIFFERENT DESIGNS THEY COULD HAVE USED BASED ON THEIR FOOTPRINT, BUT THE COLLEGE
DECIDED TO GO WITH ONE SPECIFIC. WE ALSO FOUND OUT BY QUESTIONING THEM AS TO
HOW THEY PROCEED WORKING WITH FACULTY AND STAFF, THE TYPES OF FORUMS AND MEETINGS THEY
HOLD BEFORE THEY EVEN PRODUCE A DRAFT OF WHAT THE BUILDING WOULD LOOK LIKE, AND WHEN YOU
LOOK AT THAT, AND I HAVE HAD SOME CONVERSATIONS WITH SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE IN THAT
BUILDING, AND THE DOCTOR, AS WELL, AND WE FELT THAT WAS THE FOUND — THE FIRM THAT WE
NEEDED. AND THEY HAVE AN OFFICE IN PASADENA. WE LOOKED AT MANY OF THE BUILDINGS THAT THEY
HAVE DESIGNED UP AND DOWN THE SCALE IN CALIFORNIA, AND THEY ALSO HAVE DESIGNED HOLDINGS, AND
I WILL TURN IT OVER NOW TO THE DOCTOR, WHO WILL BE ANSWERING MORE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
ABOUT THE BUILDING AND ABOUT THE PROCESS AND ABOUT WHAT WILL BE HAPPENING FROM NOW ON.>>IN ADDITION TO COMPLETING THE NURSING BUILDING,
THEY COMPLETED THE NURSING BUILDING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO. A VERY SIMILAR BUILDING. THEY HAVE ALSO COMPLETED 51 LEE D CERTIFIED
BUILDINGS, SO THEY HAVE A NUMBER OF THEIR PROFESSIONAL ARE CERTIFIED IN PERFORMING LEED
DESIGN. THEY ALSO HAVE EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH COMMUNITY
COLLEGES AND WORKING WITH THE CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE. THIS PROJECT IS A 100% STATE-FUNDED BUDGET. IT IS A REPLACEMENT PROJECT, SO WE ARE WORKING
WITH SOME CONSTRAINTS , AND WE HAVE ALREADY HAD A CONFERENCE CALL WITH THE CHANCELLOR’S
OFFICE WITH GKK WORKS, BECAUSE IT WAS PRESENTED AS
A FIVE-STORY BUILDING, AND THEY WANTED TO KNOW IF WE HAD FLEXIBILITY, LIKE HAVING A
FOUR-STORY BUILDING OR PERHAPS TWO BUILDINGS NEXT TO EACH OTHER, SO THEY ARE ALREADY LOOKING
AT OPTIONS AND WORKING WITH THE STATE. THEY HAVE EXPERIENCE, AND ANOTHER AREA WHICH
IS VERY IMPORTANT, BEING A 100% STATE-FUNDED PROJECT, IT IS A FINITE BUDGET. THE BUDGET IS $60 MILLION, $63 MILLION WITH
COST ESCALATIONS, AND WE THOUGHT THAT GKK COULD DELIVER THAT WITHIN THAT BUDGET. IF THEY CANNOT, THEN THE COLLEGE WOULD HAVE
TO COME UP WITH FIVE, WHICH WE DO NOT HAVE SET ASIDE FOR THIS PROJECT, — THEN THE COLLEGE
WOULD HAVE TO COME UP WITH IT, WHICH WE DO NOT HAVE SET ASIDE FOR THIS PROJECT. TRUSTEE: I HAVE A FOLLOW-UP. HAVE YOU HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK WITH
ANYONE FROM RIVERSIDE OR SAN DIEGO STATE THAT ARE LIVING IN THE FINAL PRODUCT OR THOSE THAT
GOT TO BE A PART OF THE WORKING PROCESS WITH THEM, AND WERE YOU SATISFIED AND/OR IMPRESSED
WITH THEIR COMMENTS?>>I DID. I SPOKE WITH SOMEONE, AND I KNOW THEY WERE
VERY IMPRESSED. I KNOW A DOCTOR HAS WORKED WITH GKK. DR. VURDIEN: I MAY ADD THAT THE PRESIDENT –>>I MAY ADD THAT THE PRESIDENT OF THE COLLEGE
SPOKE WELL OF THEM AND THE WAY THEY’VE — THE WAY THEY CONDUCTED THEMSELVES AT RIVERSIDE. TRUSTEE: IT IS GOOD TO HEAR THIS, PARTICULARLY
THAT THEY HAVE DONE SO MANY SIMILAR PROJECTS. EVERY TIME THEY DO ONE, THEY LEARN SOMETHING
NEW. THAT BENEFITS THE NEXT PERSON, SO THAT IS
REALLY GOOD INFORMATION.>>THE RIVERSIDE PROJECT IS A MODEL MATCH. IT IS A MODEL MATCH. THE PROGRAMS IN THE BUILDING, THE WAY IT IS
SITUATED, AND THEY ARE VERY PLEASED WITH IT, AND IT IS NOT ONLY MODEL MATCHED, BUT IT IS
WITH A COMMUNITY COLLEGE. TRUSTEE: THANK YOU.>>TRUSTEE WAH. TRUSTEE WAH: I REALLY DID NOT HAVE ANY QUESTIONS,
BUT I KNOW THAT WE WERE NUMBER ONE ON THE BOND LIST, AND I DO APPRECIATE TRUSTEE MARTIN’S
QUESTION, BECAUSE WE TRUST YOU, AND NOW HEARING YOUR RESPONSES, I JUST THINK THIS IS REALLY
— IT ALSO GIVES ME A GREAT DEAL OF CONFIDENCE THAT WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON THIS VERY QUICKLY
AND THAT THIS IS THE RIGHT FIRM FOR US AND WILL COME IN ON BUDGET. ONE OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO SAY, THERE HAS
BEEN A LOT OF QUESTION ABOUT BUILDING AND PLANNING IN MY COMMUNITY. I COME FROM AN OLD GUARD COMMUNITY. NEW PEOPLE COMING IN, SO THERE IS A LOT OF
DISCUSSION ON CHANGES, AND WE HAD A REALLY INTERESTING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FIRM THAT
CAME IN, AND THEY ARE DOING A HOUSE HALF A BLOCK FROM ME, AND WHAT THEY DID IS THEY HELD
A COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE ON THAT PARTICULAR PROPERTY, AND WHAT THEY DID IS DISCUSSED THE
DESIGN AND HOW IT WAS GOING TO FIT IN WITH THE REST OF THE ENVIRONMENT, AND SO I HOPE
AT SOME POINT, THIS WOULD BE A NICE OPEN HOUSE, JUST LIKE THE FAB L AB WOULD HAVE AN OPEN
HOUSE, AND WE WOULD BE ABLE TO TALK TO THE ARCHITECTS AND SEE HOW THINGS ARE GOING, SO
WHENEVER YOU ALL FEEL IT IS THE RIGHT TIME, I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO THINK ABOUT THAT.>>TRUSTEE OSTERLING? TRUSTEE OSTERLING: A LOT OF THIS IS DIALED
IN SO THE BUILDING ENVELOPE IS SOMEWHAT LOCKED IN ALREADY, AND THEN THE FUNCTIONS THAT ARE
GOING TO GO ON INSIDE THE BUILDING, THE TEACHING, ETC., ARE ALSO PRETTY WELL IDENTIFIED, AND
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE YOU COMMENT ON IS BEFORE, AND WHAT I AM GETTING AT IS PHILOSOPHICALLY,
SOME ARCHITECTS BELIEVE IN INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS BLENDING IN OR MAKING A MODERN STATEMENT THAT
PAYS HOMAGE, IF YOU WILL, TO HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE ON A CAMPUS, AND THE BEST EXAMPLE THAT I CAN
THINK OF HERE AT PCC, THE BEST EXAMPLE I CAN THINK OF AT ANY COLLEGE CAMPUS IS THE LIBRARY. IT IS JUST A MODERN CONTEMPORARY BUILDING,
WITH THE WAY IT PULLS OUT OUR TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE, IT IS OUTSTANDING, AND THEN
ALSO HERE IN PASADENA, AS WE GO WEST ON CALIFORNIA AVENUE, THERE IS THE I THINK IT IS CALLED
THE EARTH SCIENCES BUILDING, WHICH IS A COMPLETE DEPARTURE FROM EVERYTHING GOING ON THERE,
AND THE DESIGN IS VERY SUBJECTIVE. SOME PEOPLE LIKE THE FIRST EXAMPLE I GAVE. OBVIOUSLY, OR THAT BUILDING WOULD NOT HAVE
BEEN BUILT. SO MY QUESTION IS, WHEN YOU INTERVIEWED THESE
FIRMS, DID YOU DISCUSS THESE TYPES OF DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES, AND WHAT IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF
THIS FIRM AND THIS COLLEGE FOR THIS PARTICULAR BUILDING? AND ONE FINAL COMMENT, AND THEN I WILL LET
YOU RESPOND, BECAUSE IN THE SAME WAY THE LIBRARY HAS BEEN A GREAT ICON FOR PCC AS IT FRONTS
COLORADO BOULEVARD, VISIBLE, THIS BUILDING IS OUR EASTERN GATEWAY. NOT QUITE AS WELL TRAVELED, BUT IT WILL BE
VERY VISIBLE. THANK YOU.>>GKKWORKS IS NOT HERE TO IMPOSE THEIR VISION
OR THEIR PHILOSOPHY ON US. THEY UNDERSTAND THAT PASADENA CITY COLLEGE
HAS A VISION, HAS A PHILOSOPHY, HAS AN IDEA AS TO WHAT THIS BUILDING WILL LOOK LIKE AND
HOW IT IS GOING TO BLEND WITHIN OUR EXISTING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, AND WE HAVE ASKED THEM
THAT QUESTION, AND THEY HAVE SHOWN US HOW THEY HAVE WORKED WITH VERY AREAS COLLEGE DISTRICTS,
COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES, TO ENSURE THAT THE VISION AND THE PHILOSOPHY THAT THE INSTITUTION
HAS WILL BE HONORED AND THE DESIGN WILL BLEND WITH WHAT THE COLLEGE WANTS TO SEE, AND THEY
HAVE SHOWN US HOW THEY HAVE DONE THAT IN SEVERAL PLACES. TRUSTEE OSTERLING: THANK YOU.>>TRUSTEE BROWN? TRUSTEE BROWN: WHAT IS COMFORTING TO ME IS THAT WE WENT THROUGH THE ENTIRE GROUP. THE FACULTY. THE COMMITTEE. I THINK THAT IS THE ANSWER, BECAUSE AT THE
END OF THE DAY — THE FACULTY AND THE STAFF AT PCC WILL BE THE ONES THAT WILL BE CONTINUOUSLY
INTERACTING WITH THESE PEOPLE AND ASKING HARD QUESTIONS, AND THAT IS GOOD, BECAUSE WE ARE
SUPPOSED TO ASK THESE QUESTIONS, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, I AM CONFIDENT THAT THE COMMITTEE
AND DR. VURDIEN AND OUR VP PRETTY MUCH STARTED THIS
UP REAL GOOD, AND WE SHOULD BE PRETTY — WAITING FOR THEM TO GIVE US REPRESENTATION, WHICH
I AM SURE THEY WILL, OF WHAT THEY WILL DO, AND THERE IS A PROCESS. THERE IS A PROCESS, BECAUSE I REMEMBER WE
HAD THOSE PERIODIC THINGS, SO I AM VERY EXCITED AND ANXIOUS TO SEE THIS MOVE FORWARD.>>TRUSTEE OSTERLING? TRUSTEE OSTERLING: JUST ONE FOLLOW-UP. WE COVERED THIS IN THE RESPONSE, BUT I WANT
TO GET IT IN THE PUBLIC RECORD. DR. VURDI>>TRUSTEE EN, I IN PLEASED TO HEAR THAT THE
FUNDS HAVE BEEN AUTHORIZED BY THE STATE TO ISSUE THE BONDS, AND WE ARE AWARDING THIS
CONTRACT, AND SO ULTIMATELY, THIS CONTRACT WILL BE PAID BY THE STATE, SPECIFICALLY FROM
THE BOND MEASURE THAT WAS PASSED. DR. VURDIEN: YES, INCLUDING, WHICH WE HAVE NOT
MENTIONED, THE DEMOLITION OF THE BUILDING. TRUSTEE OSTERLING: THANK YOU.>>I JUST HAVE A COUPLE OF COMMENTS. MR. — FROM GKKWORKS, THANK YOU FOR COMING. WE DID NOT PUT YOU THROUGH THE WHOLE DOG AND
PONY SHOW. A DEGREE IN ARCHITECTURE. I TOOK A DIFFERENT ROUTE. AS SOON AS THEY HANDED ME THE DIPLOMA, I HAVE
THE DIPLOMA, I NEVER GOT LICENSED, AND I HAVE BEEN AROUND PASADENA FOR A LONG, LONG TIME. YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO DO A PROJECT
IN PASADENA. WE ARE NOT IN THE CITY OF PASADENA. IF YOU HAVE ANY TREPIDATION ABOUT WHAT IT
MIGHT BE LIKE TO DO ANOTHER PROJECT IN PASADENA, AND WE WILL BE MUCH MORE REASONABLE. AND THANK YOU FOR COMING.>>IF THERE ARE NO FURTHER COMMENTS, WE CAN
HAVE A VOTE. ALL IN FAVOR? WE HAVE A MOTION. IT PASSES. OK. IT PASSES, 6-0, WITH ONE ABSENT, AND THE TRUSTEE
VOTING IN FAVOR. THANK YOU. OK, ACTION ITEMS. APPROVE THE UNCLASSIFIED SALARY SCHEDULE. DR. VURDIEN: I WILL ASK FOR THIS TO BE BRIEFLY
INTRODUCED.>>THIS IS AN ITEM THAT HAS BEEN MODIFIED. THE BOARD HAS PREVIOUSLY APPROVED THE SCHEDULE,
BUT WHAT WE ARE UNDERTAKING RIGHT NOW IS WE ARE MAKING SOME CHANGES TO OUR SHORT-TERM
EMPLOYEE OR UNCLASSIFIED TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENTS. WE ARE MOVING FROM COLLEGE ASSISTANTS TO A
VARIETY OF DIFFERENT, SHORT-TERM ONES THAT ARE ALLOWABLE UNDER THE CODE, WHICH INCLUDES
APPRENTICES, INTERNS, SEASONAL, SHORT-TERM EMPLOYEES, SO WHAT WE ARE DOING IS WE ARE
REVISING HOW WE EMPLOY OUR SHORT-TERM EMPLOYEES, BUT WE HAVE NOT CHANGED THE SCHEDULE IN TERMS
OF THE RATES THAT HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY APPROVED. WE HAD JUST SIMPLY MODIFIED THE SCHEDULE BY
LISTING WHERE THOSE VARIOUS POSITIONS WILL FALL ON THE SCHEDULE, SO THAT IS THE CHANGE
WE ARE PRESENTING TONIGHT.>>DO I HEAR I MOTION? TRUSTEE BROWN: MOVE APPROVAL.>>I HAVE A QUESTION.>>WE HAD TO MAKE A MATERIAL CHANGE, ADJUSTMENT
RECENTLY. IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WE HAD TO DO FOR THE
SCHEDULE, OR –>>THE SCHEDULE WAS ACTUALLY UPDATED PRIOR
TO THE NEW YEAR, BECAUSE WE HAD TO INCREASE THE MINIMUM WAGE UP, SO WE HAVE DONE THAT,
BUT THIS WILL CONTINUE. IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS, WE WILL BRING IT BACK
AGAIN, BECAUSE WE WILL HAVE TO MAKE A NEW ADJUSTMENT FOR THE NEW YEAR, WHICH WOULD BE
$11 MINIMUM WAGE.>>PEOPLE TALK ABOUT A LIVING WAGE, BUT A
LIVING WAGE IS IN NO WAY STATUTORY. THANK YOU.>>YES.>>ALL IN FAVOR? OK. THIS PASSES, 6-0, WITH ONE ABSENT, AND THE
STUDENT TRUSTEE VOTING IN FAVOR. ADOPT THE RESOLUTION, FOR THE LIMIT. DR. VURDIEN: WE ASK YOU TO APPROVE THIS BECAUSE
THE BOARD HAS TO SET LIMITS FOR THE FISCAL SCHOOL YEAR, AND WE WENT TO ASK THE BOARD.>>MOVED.>>SECONDED.>>ANY QUESTIONS? VOTE, PLEASE. IT PASSES, 6-0, WITH THE STUDENT TRUSTEE VOTING
IN FAVOR. APPROVE TENTATIVE AGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE PASADENA
AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT AND THE POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION. DR. VURDIEN: DR. NORMAN?>>THIS IS BASED ON OUR SUNSHINE PROPOSAL
TO OPEN THE CONTRACT. WE DID IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR. WE WERE ABLE TO FINALIZE THE NEGOTIATION’S
A FEW WEEKS AGO AND, OF COURSE, PREPARED IT AFTER THEY RATIFIED THE AGREEMENT WITH THEIR
UNIT, SO THEY HAVE RATIFIED THIS TWO-YEAR CONTRACT. IT GOES TO 2019. IT ALSO INCLUDES AN ITEM RELATIVE TO BENEFITS. IT ADDRESSES BENEFITS IN TERMS OF WHAT WE
WILL BE OFFERING THIS YEAR. IT IS A TWO-YOUR AGREEMENT IN TERMS OF COMPENSATION
AND BENEFITS, AND, AGAIN, — IT IS A TWO-YEAR AGREEMENT IN TERMS OF COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS,
AND, AGAIN, THEY HAVE APPROVED IT.>>ALL IN FAVOR QUESTION MARK IT PASSES, 6-0,
WITH ONE ABSENT — ALL IN FAVOR? IT PASSES, SIX-ZERO, WITH ONE ABSENT AND THE
STUDENT TRUSTEE VOTING IN FAVOR. FUNDING AND EXPENDITURES. DR. VURDIEN: DR., WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO THIS?>>YES. IT REQUIRED THIS ANNUAL BOARD ITEM WHICH STATES
WHERE THE FUNDS ARE BEING USED P,ROP — PROP 30, IN THIS SAYS.>>MOTION TO APPROVE.>>SECOND.>>ALL IN FAVOR? IT PASSES, 6-0, WITH ONE ABSENT, AND THE STUDENT
TRUSTEE VOTING IN FAVOR. INFORMATION ITEMS. WE HAVE ALREADY HAD THE PRESENTATION FROM
THE FOUNDATION. I JUST HAVE SOME INFORMATION CONCERNING THE
PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH. THE BOARD HAS A BYLAW , A COPY OF WHICH IS
PART OF THE AGENDA PACKAGE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE BOARD AND THE PUBLIC. ALSO, IN THE BOARD PACKAGE WAS A SCHEDULE. IT WAS A PROPOSED SCHEDULE PREPARED BY OUR
CONSULTANT AND ASSOCIATES BACK IN SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER 2014 ONE WE DID THE PREVIOUS SEARCH. THAT WAS INCLUDED JUST TO GIVE PEOPLE AN IDEA
OF THOSE WHO WERE ON THE BOARD THEN OF HOW THE PROCESS UNFOLDED AND THE TIMELINE. THIS IS NOT A TIMELINE FOR THIS. BACKGROUND INFORMATION. AND THEN THERE IS ALSO A DOCUMENT, WHICH WAS
PUBLISHED BY THE ASPEN INSTITUTE. THIS DOCUMENT AND ANOTHER ONE OR TWO OR DOCUMENTS
WERE PRESENTED AT A CONVENTION OF THE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE LEAGUE A COUPLE OF YEARS
AGO, AND IT WAS PRESENTED BY SOMEBODY FROM THE ASPEN INSTITUTE, WHOSE NAME I DON’T RECALL. I DON’T REMEMBER. BUT ALSO, HELPING THEM DO THE PRESENTATION
WAS DR. HOUSTON, WHO IS THE CHANCELLOR OF A COMMUNITY
COLLEGE DISTRICT. HE HAS ALSO DONE A RETREAT FOR US ABOUT ONE
POINT FIVE YEARS AGO OR SO, BUT ANY CASE, — BUT IN ANY CASE, I JUST INCLUDED THAT AS
BACKGROUND READING MATERIAL MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE PUBLIC IN THE AGENDA PACKAGE. I WOULD LIKE TO DRAW PEOPLE’S ATTENTION TO
A COUPLE OF POSITIONS OF THE BYLAW. THE BYLAW DESCRIBES SEVERAL PROCEDURES FOR
SELECTING A PRESIDENT, AND ONE OF THEM, WHICH WE WILL CERTAINLY BE IMPLEMENTING , IS THE
CREATION OF A SCREENING COMMITTEE TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE THIS SCREENING COMMITTEE IS
SPECIFIED IN THE BYLAW APPOINTED BY EACH OF THE TRUSTEES TO REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE ACADEMIC
SENATE, TO REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION, AND STUDENT TRUSTEE WOULD BE
A MEMBER OF THE SCREENING COMMITTEE, AND THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVES, WHOEVER
THE STUDENTS THAT ARE REPRESENTING THE COMMITTEE. THE DUTIES OF THAT COMMITTEE WOULD BE TO SCREEN
— TAKE A LOOK AT ALL THE APPLICANTS, AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF WHOEVER WE HIRE, TO
NARROW IT DOWN TO A SET OF SEMI FINALISTS. LAST TIME, WE HAD SIX THAT WERE PRESENTED
TO THE BOARD. THE BOARD INTERVIEWED EACH ONE OF THEM. WE NARROWED IT DOWN TO THREE. THEN WE SELECTED DR. VURDIEN: . THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IF WE STICK
TO APPROXIMATELY THE SCHEDULE THAT WAS FOLLOWED LAST TIME, IT’S SOMETHING THAT WOULD OCCUR
AFTER THE FIRST OF THE YEAR. THE SCREENING COMMITTEE MET DURING FEBRUARY. THINGS UNFOLDED AFTER THAT. THE BOARD BYLAWS SPECIFY ALL DISCUSSIONS AND
ACTIONS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES REGARDING THE PROCESS TO SELECT THE SUPERINTENDENT PRESIDENTIAL
IN AN OPEN MEETING OF THE BOARD, WHEN WE DISCUSSED HOW WE WOULD DO THIS SPECIAL THAT MEANT, HE
SAID IT NEEDS TO BE AN OPEN SESSION. ANYTIME WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS,
PERSONNEL TYPES OF MATTER, THAT IS APPROPRIATELY DONE IN CLOSED SESSION. ONE OF THE KEY THINGS WILL BE A DISCUSSION
OF WHAT THE JOB DESCRIPTION WOULD BE. MY COLLEGE DOES A SEARCH LIKE THIS, THEY ONLY
TAKE A LOOK AT THE JOB DESCRIPTION VERY CAREFULLY. LAST TIME AROUND, THAT WAS DONE IN THE MONTH
OF OCTOBER. THE MONTH IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE HIRING
OF A SEARCH FIRM. THAT TOOK PLACE AFTER THE SEARCH FIRM HAD
CONDUCTED A PUBLIC FORUM. I WOULD EMPHASIZE THIS TIME, I THINK THE LAST
TIME WE DID THIS ON A FRIDAY, THIS IS PROBABLY A BETTER DAY OF THE WEEK, TO MAKE SURE WE
MAXIMIZE PARTICIPATION. THE BOARD WILL USE THE FEEDBACK PRIOR TO MAKING
THE DECISION IN FINALIZING THE JOB DESCRIPTION AND WHAT WE WANT TO EMPHASIZE WHAT WE ARE
LOOKING FOR. THERE’S ALSO AN APPOINTMENT, AND AD HOC COMMITTEE
APPOINTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF COORDINATED THE LOGISTICS AND PROCEDURES OF THE SEARCH. WE HAVE HAD THIS EACH TIME, LAST TIME AROUND,
TRUSTEE FELLOW WAS PRESIDENT, AND HE DESIGNATED HIMSELF VICE PRESIDENT AT THE TIME BROWN,
AND WAH, TO BE MEMBERS OF THE AD HOC COMMITTEE. I WILL BE DESIGNATING MYSELF, TRUSTEE FELLOW,
AND TRUSTEE OSTERLING. TRUSTEE FELLOW HAS TRAVELED DURING THE MONTH
OF OCTOBER. IF THERE’S ANY NEED FOR THIS AD HOC COMMITTEE
TO DO ANYTHING — THIS IS SORT OF A STANDBY AND CASE THERE IS NEED FOR COORDINATION THAT
DOESN’T REQUIRE CALLING A FULL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, I WILL ASK THE IMAGE
IT — IMMEDIATE PRESIDENT TO STEP IN. THAT’S PRETTY MUCH THE OUTLINE OF HOW THE
BOARD BYLAWS CALL FOR US TO UNDERTAKE THIS PROCESS AND IT GIVES YOU AN IDEA OF THE MATERIALS,
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE LAST TIME HERE, TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY ON HOW WE DID THIS. EXACTLY HOW WE DO THIS WILL BE DECIDED AFTER
WE MOVE AHEAD. I EXPECT THE AD HOC COMMITTEE WILL PROBABLY
MAKE THE RECOMMENDATION FOR THE SEPTEMBER MEETING ON PROCEDURES TO MOVE AHEAD AND SOLICIT
THE PROPOSALS FROM THE SEARCH FIRMS THAT ARE OUT THERE. THAT IS MY INFORMATION COMMENT. IF THERE IS ANY QUESTIONS THAT ANY TRUSTEES
HAVE? TRUSTEE WAH: I WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED. I’M HEARING I THINK THAT WE REALLY ONLY HAVE
TWO TRUSTEES WHO HAVE NOT BEEN THROUGH THIS. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE PREMATURE. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE NOT CONFUSE
A PERCEPTION THAT THIS IS — THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE FLEXIBILITY. THE PROCEDURE MAY CHANGE. THAT IS UP TO US AS AN ENTIRE BOARD TO DISCUSS
HOW WE MOVE FORWARD.I THINK IT IS HIGHLY DEPENDENT ALSO ON THE WE TAKE AS SEARCH FIRMS. NUMBER ONE, I BELIEVE WE AGREED TO ACCEPT
DR. VURDIEN’S RECOMMENDATION TO TALK ABOUT HOW
WE AS A BOARD WORK TOGETHER, AND HOW WE WOULD WORK TOGETHER WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT. I THINK THAT IS THE END OF THE RELATIONSHIP
ISSUE. TO SELECT WHAT WE DO AND HOW WE SELECT THE
NEXT SUPERINTENDENT, AND HOW WE ALL AGREE WE BEHAVE, WHAT ARE THE NORMS WE WILL ABIDE
BY TO MAKE THIS A STRONG WORKING RELATIONSHIP. I APPRECIATE THAT DR. VURDIEN HAS ALSO AGREED TO BE A PARTICIPANT
AND HELP US IN NOT ONLY AGREEING TO WORK WITH US AND FACILITATORS SO WE CAN DEFINE THIS
STRONGER RELATIONSHIP, BUT ALSO HELPING US WITH THE SEARCH FIRMS. I REALLY APPRECIATE DR. VURDIEN’S GRACIOUSNESS. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE AS THE PUBLIC HEARS
THIS INFORMATION THAT THEY DON’T SEE THAT THIS IS NECESSARILY — IT MAY FOLLOW A SIMILAR
PATTERN, BUT THERE MAY BE DEVIATIONS, AND IT NEEDS TO BE DECIDED BY THE BOARD AS A WHOLE.>>THANK YOU. TRUSTEE BROWN. TRUSTEE BROWN: YES. I WOULD LIKE TO UPHOLD WHAT TRUSTEE WAH SAID. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE CAN WORK AS A BOARD
— SORRY. THE DECISIONS THAT WE ARE MAKING , OR WILL
BE MAKING, THE PROCESS, THE SELECTION OF THE SEARCH FIRM AND ALL THIS, THIS IS SOMETHING
THAT WE SIT DOWN AND WORK OUT TOGETHER. THE GUIDELINES FOR DEPOSITS, WHATEVER WE CALL
IT, WE WANT TO DO THAT AS A BOARD. YES, AND LET’S REMEMBER THE MOST IMPORTANT
THING WAS WHAT TRUSTEE WAH SAID, THAT WE HAVE TO FIGURE A WAY OUT TO DO COMMUNICATIONS,
AND OF COURSE, APPRECIATING AND USING THE EXPERTISE OF OUR PRESIDENT, WHICH IS GOING
TO BE WITH US A YEAR. SO LET’S JUST THINK ABOUT THAT.>>THANK YOU. ANY OTHER OBSERVATIONS OR COMMENTS? THANK YOU.>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I WANT TO START BY SAYING THAT THE SCHOOL
SEMESTER WILL BEGIN IN 10 DAYS FROM NOW, ON MONDAY THE 28TH. AS OF THIS MORNING, OUR ENROLLMENT OF CREDIT
AND NONCREDIT, UNDUPLICATED HEADCOUNT IS 27,120 STUDENTS. THAT’S ABOUT 89% CAPACITY. WE DO BELIEVE BASED ON WHAT WE ARE SEEING
HAPPENING THAT THIS WILL GO UP TO PROBABLY 94% OR 95% BY THE FRIDAY PRIOR TO THE START
OF THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. YOU HEARD THE PRESENTATION FROM THE FOUNDATION
BOARD. AS OF YESTERDAY, WE HAD 105 STUDENTS WHO WILL
BE BENEFITING FROM THE PASADENA COLLEGE PROMISE AND WE ARE VERY PROUD TO SAY THAT THEY COME
FROM 16 PUBLIC AND PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOLS. IT DOES APPEAR THAT ARCADIA HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE
WE WILL BE HOLDING OUR SEPTEMBER 20 BOARD MEETING, HAS THE GREATEST NUMBER OF STUDENTS. THE NEXT THING THEY WANT TO TELL YOU THAT
WE HAVE 60% MALE AND 49% FEMALE. 88% OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE ON THE PROMISE
PLAN ON TRANSFERRING TO A FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTION. AS YOU KNOW, WE ARE CURRENTLY IN THE FOURTH
WEEK OF THE PATHWAYS PROGRAM. I HAVE TO SAY THAT OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS,
WE HAVE INCREASED THAT PARTICIPATION NUMBER 400 TIMES. FOURFOLD. WE HAVE NOW 3160 NINE STUDENTS IN THE PATHWAYS
PROGRAM. — 316 NINE STUDENTS IN THE PATHWAYS PROGRAM. WE HAVE DONE A WONDERFUL JOB AT THAT. THE OTHER THING WE ARE DOING ALSO WITH DEAN
ARMANDO IS THAT WE ARE ALSO APPROACHING THOSE STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT IDENTIFIED THEMSELVES
AS WANTING TO BE PART OF ANY COHORT. WE ARE GOING AFTER THEM. WE WANT TO MENTOR THEM, SUPPORT THEM, AND
GET THEM EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL, SO THAT THEY CAN TRANSFER. AS YOU KNOW FOR THE SECOND YEAR, WE HAVE TRANSFORMED
THE HARVEST IN THE FALL — INTO A WELCOME CENTER, WHERE STUDENTS CAN DO ONE STOP SHOPPING. THEY COME HERE AND GET EVERYTHING. THEY GET ADVISED, COUNSEL, THEY GET TO TAKE
CLASSES — PICK CLASSES, AND THEY GET THEIR ID. IT’S WONDERFUL. I’M WORKING TO SEE WHAT WE CAN DO IN THE L
BUILDING TO MAKE THAT BUILDING TRANSFORMED INTO SOME KIND OF A ONE-STOP CENTER WHERE
STUDENTS KEEP GOING AROUND AS THEY COME IN THE BUILDING AND GET ALL THE SERVICES THAT
THEY NEED. AS OF THIS MORNING, WE HAVE SERVED 3366 STUDENTS
IN THE CENTER. WE ARE PROUD TO SAY THAT NUMBER IS SIGNIFICANTLY
GREATER THAN WHAT WE HAD LAST YEAR. LAST WEEK, SEVERAL STUDENTS IN FOUR DIFFERENT
TEAMS PARTICIPATED IN THE FORMULA E RACING AT THE ART CENTER. I GOT TO BE A JUDGE FOR THE THIRD TIME. I WILL SAY THAT OUR STUDENTS DID VERY WELL. ONE OF THE TEAMS WON FIRST PRIZE. THERE WERE INTERNATIONAL TEAMS FROM CHINA
AND JAPAN, SOUTHEAST ASIA, FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, AND MEXICO. WE DID VERY, VERY WELL. WE NEED TO THANK SANDY LEE FOR TAKING OUR
STUDENTS THERE AND ALSO TRUSTEE WAH, YOU WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO HEAR THAT ONE OF THE TEAMS
INCLUDED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THEY CAME FROM TEMPLE CITY. WE WERE ABLE TO INCLUDE THEM THROUGH A SPECIAL
PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE IN OUR TEAMS. NEXT WEEK, ON FRIDAY, WE WILL HOST OUR NEW
STUDENT SUCCESS DAY AND OPEN HOUSE IN THE MORNING. AT 12:00, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A LUNCHEON
FOR ALL FACULTY AND STAFF. AT 12:45, WE WILL GATHER IN THE AUDITORIUM
FOR OUR CONVOCATION, WHICH WILL INCLUDE REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE SENATE , AND THE STUDENTS, FACULTY,
AND MANAGEMENT. AFTER THAT, THERE WILL BE, AND OF COURSE ROSS
SELVIDGE WILL ALSO BE GIVING A WELCOME AT THAT TIME. AFTER THAT, THERE WILL BE A CITIZENSHIP PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT DAY, THAT WILL BE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A PRESENTATION ON GENERATIONAL
GAP, DIVERSITY, CULTURE GAP, AND GENDER ISSUES. THAT WILL BE A PRESENTATION. I WILL BE GOING TO HAWAII NEXT WEEK, NOT ON
VACATION, BUT AS PART OF THE MILITARY HAS INVITED COLLEGE PRESIDENTS AND WILL BE TAKING
A TEAM OF 21 COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENTS AND ADMINISTRATORS AND FACULTY TO HAWAII TO
REVIEW THE EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES OF THE MILITARY IN HAWAII, AND ALSO THERE WILL BE A COLLEGE
FAIR THAT WE WILL PARTICIPATE IN. THIS CONCLUDES MY REPORT.>>THANK YOU, DR. VURDIEN. I WILL NOW MOVE TO ANNOUNCEMENTS BY SHARED
GOVERNANCE REPRESENTATIVES, BEGINNING WITH THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS.>>HELLO, AND THAT EVENING. AT THE MOMENT, WE ARE IN PREPARATION FOR WELCOME
WEEK AS WELL AS NEW STUDENT SUCCESS WEEK AND CLUB BRUSH AS WELL, WHICH WILL BE FROM TUESDAY,
SEPTEMBER 12, TO THURSDAY THE 14TH. THIS YEAR WE ARE CHANGING A FEW THINGS. INSTEAD OF CALLING A CLUB LEAGUE, WE ARE CALLING
IT CLUB BRUSH — RUSH. WE ARE HAVING TWO SESSIONS CAN MAKE SURE WE
ARE INVOLVING ALL THE NICE STUDENTS AS WELL. THANK YOU. — ALL THE NIGHT STUDENTS AS WELL. THANK YOU.>>GOOD EVENING. I’M HERE ON BEHALF OF AUDREY JOSEPH, WHO COULD
NOT BE WITH US TONIGHT. THE SENATE IS VERY BUSY. THE NEW EXECUTIVE OFFICES HAVE ONLY BEEN IN
OFFICE ARE ABOUT THREE WEEKS NOW, BUT AS OF TODAY THEY VOTED AND APPROVED THE APPOINTMENT
OF TWO NEW SENATORS. THEY ARE APPROVED WITH BYLAWS. WE ARE ALSO REPRESENTING OTHER THAN THE MAIN
CAMPUS. THE SENATE ALSO VOTED AND APPROVED BY LAW
CHANGES WHICH FURTHER CLARIFY LANGUAGE REGARDING PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES. ADDITIONALLY, DENISE ALBRIGHT WAS APPOINTED
AS A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR. IN THIS CAPACITY, SHE WILL FACILITATE THE
PROCESS AND COORDINATE PAPERWORK FOR ALL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES. FELICIA MITCHELL, WHO LAST YEAR SERVED AS
THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES REP, IS WORKING TO PRODUCE AN UPCOMING NEWSLETTER THAT SHOULD BE COMING
OUT IN ABOUT THREE WEEKS. AND ONE OF THE NEWEST DEVELOPMENTS IS THAT
THE SENATE HAS BEEN INVITED TO BE INVOLVED IN THE WELCOMING OF NEW FACULTY AT THE NEW
FACULTY ORIENTATION. THEY ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. AS WELL, THEY HAVE BEEN INVITED TO ATTEND
THE ACADEMIC SENATE RETREAT, AND THEY ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND THAT. THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT.>>THANK YOU. NOW FOR WHAT I THINK WILL BE A VISUALLY ARTISTIC
PRESENTATION.>>I WANT TO THANK THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD
FOR MAKING THE OBSERVATIONS ABOUT HOW THE NEW BUILDINGS ARE TO BE DESIGNED AND LAID
OUT. I APPRECIATED THE AESTHETIC DIMENSION OF THAT. ON JULY 23, THE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATED — ASSOCIATION
CONCLUDED ITS RETREAT AT PASADENA. THE FOCUS OF THE EVENT WAS A WORKING SESSION
DEDICATED TO A LONG OVERDUE AND ONGOING REVISION OF THE MANAGER’S HANDBOOK. WE THANKED THE 35 PLUS MANAGERS WHO ENTHUSIASTICALLY
PARTICIPATED. THIS COMES AT A HIGH VACATION TIME. ALSO, STARTING ON AUGUST 28 WITH THE OPENING
OF SCHOOL, AND MANAGERS WILL ONCE AGAIN BE MAKING THEMSELVES AVAILABLE FOR OUR SUCCESSFUL
WEEKEND EVENING MANAGERS COVERAGE. AGAIN, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE ENCOURAGE
ALL MANAGERS TO PARTICIPATE IN, AND WE HAVE, GENERALLY SPEAKING, AND UNSCRAMBLING PARTICIPATION
BY MOST. THANK YOU.>>THANK YOU. THE NEXT ITEM IS PROPOSED FUTURE BOARD BUSINESS
MEETING DATES. EXCUSE ME, STUDENT TRUSTEE. MS. EKSHIAN: GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. STUDENTS ARE GETTING READY FOR THE UPCOMING
SEMESTER BEGINNING ON AUGUST 28.PATHWAYS HAS ALSO ORGANIZED ORIENTATION FOR NEW STUDENTS,
AND THAT AND THAT FRIDAY ON THE 25TH. NEXT FRIDAY IS ALSO NEW STUDENT SUCCESS DAY. STUDENTS COME TO GET FAMILIARIZED WITH THE
CAMPUS. THANK YOU.>>I WAS GOING TO HAVE YOU DO YOUR REPORT. PROPOSED FUTURE BOARD BUSINESS MEETING DATES. AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES. I’M SORRY.>>ARE YOU IN A HURRY TO GET OUT OF HERE? [LAUGHTER]>>I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE PEOPLE WHO DO
EXTRAORDINARY THINGS. I HAD SOME STUDENTS IN MY DISTRICT WHO HAD
CHALLENGES, AND WERE ACCEPTED TO SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY. I APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH. THANK YOU.>>TRUSTEE OSTERLING. MR. OSTERLING: RIGHT HERE IN CRUMPLING, WE HAD
THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SCHOOL TRUSTEES ASSOCIATION MEETING. TO MY PRESIDENT — PLEASANT SURPRISE, ALMOST
ALL MY FELLOW TRUSTEES TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE LOCAL VENUE AND JOINED IN THE MEETING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT, FELLOW TRUSTEES. OUR FEATURED SPEAKER WAS OUR NEW L.A. COUNTY
SUPERVISOR, KATHRYN BARKER — BARGER. KNOWING THAT HE WOULD BE THE SPEAKER, I HAD
A NOT SO HIDDEN AGENDA. THAT’S WHY I INVITED OUR ASSOCIATED STUDENTS
PRESIDENT, KIELY LAMB. OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS DO NOT LIKE TO HEAR
FROM US ABOUT STUDENT ISSUES. THEY LIKE TO HEAR FROM STUDENTS. SHE GAVE A PRESENTATION ABOUT THE TRANSIT
PASS , AND THE COUNTY SUPERVISOR HAPPENS TO SIT ON THE METRO TRANSIT BOARD. SHE WAS NOT AWARE OF SOME OF THE INFORMATION
THAT KYLIE PRESENTED. SHE IS GOING TO TAKE A HARD LOOK AT RESTORING
THE TRANSIT PASSES BACK TO THE WAY THEY USED TO BE BEFORE THEY WERE SEVERELY CUT BACK. SO KIELY, THERE’S A FUTURE FOR YOU IN LOBBYING
ELECTED OFFICIALS, SHOULD YOU GO DOWN THAT ROUTE. THANK YOU FOR COMING AND DOING THAT PRESENTATION.>>THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. I’M READY. TRUSTEE MARTIN: AND DOWNTOWN L.A., IS A VERY
PRESTIGIOUS FOUNDATION CALLED THE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. IT SERVES A PURPOSES, ONE OF WHICH IS TO INVEST
FUNDS FOR DONORS WHO WANT TO HAVE A PARTICULAR CAUSE AND MAKE SURE THAT THEIR CAUSE MOVES
FORWARD. THEY WERE ALSO INSTRUMENTAL IN SUPPORTING
THE CITY OF MONEY — THE CITY TO HELP RESIDENTS GO TO COLLEGE. I BRING THIS UP BECAUSE IN THE MOST RECENT
QUARTERLY, THEY HAVE A SPIEL ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS AND HOW THEY ARE FUNDING. THERE IS A VERY NICE PICTURE WITH THREE STUDENTS
HOLDING UP THE BANNERS OF THREE LOCAL FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONS. BUT TO THE CAREFUL EYE, THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN
STANDING RIGHT OUT HERE AT PASADENA CITY COLLEGE. I’M SURE IT’S BECAUSE OF OUR ARCHITECTURE. NOW THAT THAT’S ON THE TABLE. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE I AM ON THIS QUESTION
OF ARCHITECTURE. ANYWAY, I JUST THOUGHT I COULDN’T PASS UP
THE OPPORTUNITY AS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE TO POINT OUT THEY MAY BE PROMOTING SOME OTHER
FOUR YEARS, BUT WHERE THEY WANT TO DO IT, OF COURSE, IS RIGHT HERE. WHICH ALSO BRINGS TO MIND SOMETIME IN THE
LAST MONTH, MY WIFE AND I WERE WATCHING SOME MOVIE ON NETFLIX ABOUT SOME COLLEGE STUDENT. OF COURSE, IT WAS ALL FILMED RIGHT HERE AT
PASADENA CITY COLLEGE. THEY CAREFULLY CHANGED THE NAME TO SOMETHING
ELSE. ANYWAYS, IT IS OBVIOUSLY A VERY IMPORTANT
THING WE ARE DOING. I JUST ENJOYED POINTING OUT LITTLE SUBTLETIES
WHERE THEY COME UP.>>TRUSTEE WAH. TRUSTEE WAH: WELL, I MISSED DR. VURDIEN’S FORUM, BUT I HEARD IT WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL. I ATTENDED A LUNCH AND I HAD A CHANCE TO HEAR
ABOUT PRINCES — FOOD PANTRIES. I UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE SERVING 200 STUDENTS,
AT LEAST 200 PER WEEK, AND WE HOPE TO MOVE THAT UP TO 500. AND THEY BOUGHT A COMMERCIAL SIZE REFRIGERATOR
SO THEY CAN INCREASE STORAGE FOR FRESH FOOD TO GIVE OUT. IT HAS BEEN REALLY SUCCESSFUL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP. THE COMMUNITY WAS SO APPRECIATED — APPRECIATIVE
OF HEARING THIS. I ENCOURAGE THE COLLEGE TO PUT OUT MORE INFORMATION. I KNOW OUR ROTARY CLUB HAS BEEN WAITING TO
HEAR HOW WE CAN BE HELPFUL TO YOU IN THIS, BECAUSE STUDENTS AND THEIR WELFARE ARE VERY
IMPORTANT TO US. IT’S A GREAT WAY TO FACILITATE PARTNERSHIP. I ALSO WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THE WELCOME CENTER. I HEARD GREAT COMPLIMENTS FROM STUDENTS IN
MY AREA. IT DOES SOUND AND FEEL TO ME MORE LIKE A FOUR-YEAR
COLLEGE. THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THAT HAPPEN. I WANT TO CONGRATULATE TRUSTEE OSTERLING ON
HIS FIRST MEETING, AND I WOULD LIKE TO ASK THAT WE ADJOURN THIS MEETING IN MEMORY OF
JOE, MADE AT THE LAST MEETING. JOE PASSED AWAY LAST MONTH. JOE WAS ALSO A 35 YEAR PROFESSOR HERE. HE WAS A PROFESSOR EMERITUS AND A SPEECH AND
DEBATE COACH. HE WAS A SPEECH COAST — COACH FOR THE TOURNAMENT
OF ROSES QUEEN AND COURT. I THINK HOPEFULLY WE WOULD ALL AGREE TO DO
THAT. THE OTHER THING I WANTED TO BRING UP, AND
YOU MAY HAVE BEEN APPROACHED BY PASADENA UNIFIED, THAT THEY HAVE A RESOLUTION ON LGBTQ. I WAIT FOR THE STUDENTS TO FORWARD THAT TO
US. I THINK THEY FEEL IT WAS SOMETHING REALLY
IMPORTANT THEY HAVE IN THEIR COMMUNITY. THAT’S IT.>>THANK YOU. I HAVE JUST TWO POINTS TO MAKE. I WAS ALSO UP THERE AT THE CENTER FOR THE
FORMULA E RACES. I’M GLAD I AM NOT COMPETING WITH THEM. IT IS REMARKABLE. I FIND THE VARIOUS LITTLE ENGINEERING FEATURES
AND REFINEMENTS THAT THEY COME UP WITH, TRYING TO IMPROVE ON PREVIOUS YEARS, JUST TO BE REMARKABLE. PARTICULARLY TO THOSE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
WHO PROBABLY ANNOUNCED THEY WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL. THEY DIDN’T MAKE IT INTO THE FINALS, BUT IF
THEY COME HERE, THEY WILL, AFTER THEY GRADUATE. I WAS AT THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM. ONE POINT THAT HE MENTIONED OF THE PASADENA
PROMISES, THAT APPARENTLY WE ARE NOW ABLE, OR WILL SOON BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY IDENTIFY
STUDENTS WHO WOULD QUALIFY WHO MAY NOT KNOW THAT THEY QUALIFY. I HAD MENTIONED THIS BECAUSE I THINK IT’S
A GREAT IDEA, AND ALSO BECAUSE I TALKED ABOUT THIS PROGRAM WITH SOME PEOPLE, AND I POINT
OUT THERE ISN’T A DEAN’S TEST. SOME PEOPLE TOLD ME THAT THEY WANT TO APPLY,
BUT THERE’S NOT ENOUGH MONEY. WE WILL BASICALLY TELL YOU THAT IT’S THERE
AND I ENCOURAGE YOU TO STEP UP AND TAKE ADVANTAGE.>>WE ARE DOING IT. WE ARE IDENTIFYING THEM.>>YES. STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO APPLY IF THEY HAVE
APPLIED TO THE COLLEGE ALREADY, WE RUN A NIGHTLY JOB THAT IDENTIFIES THE STUDENTS WITHOUT THEM
EVEN HAVING TO CHECK.>>WHEN DID THEY FIND OUT THEY ARE GETTING
THE PROMISE?>>THERE IS A COMMUNICATION THAT IS SENT FROM
OUR VERY OWN STAFF MEMBER. HE HAS BEEN SENDING THAT NOTIFICATION TO THE
STUDENTS.>>I DON’T KNOW HOW THE REGISTRATION PROCESS
WORKS EXACTLY THESE DAYS, BUT SUPPOSE YOU ARE GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS, AT SOME POINT
YOU HAVE TO WRITE A CHECK, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO?>>CORRECT.>>OK. CLOSED FUTURE BOARD BUSINESS MEETING DATES. DR. VURDIEN? DR. VURDIEN: THE NEXT MEETING IS ON SEPTEMBER
THE SIXTH, RIGHT HERE. AND THEN ON SEPTEMBER 20, IT WILL BE IN ARCADIA. I KNOW THAT MS. THOMPSON IS WORKING ON SETTING UP A DATE FOR
A BOARD RETREAT IN SEPTEMBER OR EARLY OCTOBER AT A DATE THAT IS CONVENIENT FOR EVERYBODY.>>THANK YOU. PROPOSED FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS. DO THE TRUSTEES HAVE ANY PROPOSED FUTURE AGENDA
ITEMS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN BROUGHT FORWARD? TRUSTEE WAH:>>ALTHOUGH THE STRATEGIC PLAN IS ALREADY
LISTED ON THE ITEMS, THE ONLY TRUSTEE WHO HAS RECOMMENDED THAT WE HAVE THE — HAVE THAT
— I KNOW EVEN THOUGH THERE IS ONE TRUSTEE THAT MAKES A RECOMMENDATION, THE DOCTOR HAS
BEEN GOOD ABOUT TRYING TO GET A DATE. THIS IS A REALLY GOOD TIME FOR US AS WE TRY
TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE RETREAT DATE, THAT WE MOVE THAT STRATEGIC PLAN UP. MAYBE WE DISCUSSED THAT.>>WE WILL DO THAT.>>THANK YOU.>>WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WHAT TIMEFRAME?>>LET ME CHECK WITH STAFF ON MONDAY MORNING
AND I CAN GIVE YOU THAT INFORMATION AT THE NEXT BOARD MEETING. I NEED TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH TIME IT WILL TAKE
SO THAT WE CAN GIVE YOU A TIME FRAME AS TO WHEN WE WOULD PRESENTED TO YOU.>>THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THE OTHER ITEMS, THE BOARD’S POLICY SUBCOMMITTEE
MET TODAY. WE TALKED ABOUT THE UPCOMING DRONE POLICY,
AND HOW THAT RELATES TO DATA SECURITY. THIS ALSO RELATES TO THE WHOLE TECHNOLOGY
PLAN. THAT WAS ALSO REQUEST — A REQUEST I MADE. I THINK I AM LISTED AS THE ONLY BOARD MEMBER,
BUT IF WE COULD MOVE THAT, IF THE OTHER MEMBERS AGREE TO MOVE THAT TO ANOTHER DATE.>>WE DID PRESENT THE TECHNOLOGY PLAN, BUT
WE ARE GOING TO TAKE THAT TECHNOLOGY PLAN AND PUT IT TOGETHER WITH THE BUSINESS CONTINUE
OF THE COLLEGE. WE WILL PUT THE TWO TOGETHER AND DO OUR BEST
TO HAVE A PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD. I KNOW HE IS HERE, HOPEFULLY THE VERY BEGINNING
OF FEBRUARY. WITH THAT BE A OK TIME TO HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY
AND BUSINESS PLAN?>>I THINK THAT WOULD BE GREAT. I THINK THE TECHNOLOGY PRESENTATION WE HAD
TALKED ABOUT THE GOALS, BUT WE NEVER REALLY SAW THE PLAN. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE HAD A CHANCE TO REALLY
SEE IT IN DETAIL AND BE ABLE TO DISCUSS IT. ESPECIALLY WITH THE DATA SECURITY ISSUES THAT
HAVE BEEN HITTING VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING THE COLLEGES. I THINK THAT WOULD BE IMPORTANT. THE OTHER REQUESTS I HAD MADE — A THANK YOU
HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS INFORMATION. I KNOW WE HIRED A CONSULTANT AND WE WILL HAVE
A PRESENTATION ON THAT.>>I THINK YOU RECEIVED A PRELIMINARY REPORT
AND THE FINAL REPORT WILL BE RECEIVED.>>RECEIVED A TRAFFICKED — GREET RECEIVED
A DRAFT AND ASKED THEM TO LOOK AT SPECIFIC AREAS. WE EXPECT A FINAL REPORT WITHIN THE NEXT 2-3
WEEKS.>>THANK YOU.>>YOU CAN ADD ME TO THE TRUSTEES ON THE LIST
FOR THE TECHNOLOGY PLAN.>>THANK YOU. NOW WE HAVE A CLOSED SESSION ITEM, A VALUATION
OF EMPLOYEE, TO FOR INTENDED PRESIDENT, EITHER ANY PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THIS CLOSED AGENDA
ITEM?>>NO PUBLIC COMMENTS.>>WE WILL ADJOURN TO CLOSE SESSION. — CLOSED SESSION. ♪
