The High Court has sentenced
a former trustee of a Maori trust to 5 years jail for stealing
just over $1 million. Stephen James Henare, 62, was sentenced to 5 years 2 months
for stealing 1.08 million dollars when he was a trustee
of Parengarenga 3G Trust. The Far North trust income
came from a 500-hectare forestry block in the Aupouri Forest. Mr Henare lied
to the Maori Land Court about the financial position
of the trust, after which an application
to have him replaced as trustee was dismissed. After that, he went on to steal
the trust’s remaining 400,000 dollars.
