My name is Spencer Haydary and I am a Junior here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying Psychology and Communication. I was born and raised in Rockford, IL and my dad actually went here, and he studied Psychology as well. So I was raised from a very early age with the mindset that I was going to go into Psychology and it was pretty much determined that this school was going to be my top pick, and it was. My mom always wanted me to become as involved as possible whether it was learning an instrument, becoming a blackbelt, or earning my Eagle Scout. So both of my parents really instilled in me the desire and the drive to come to this campus and make a difference. I’m running for Student Trustee of this campus, and what makes me unique is that I previously served as Student Trustee before I came here. I championed everything from an affordable education, to establishing a scholarship fund for Latino students. I’m running because this University has been plagued by scandal after scandal, and it’s time to move forward and make sure that this never happens again. Also, I really want to address student deaths, whether it be due to suicide, risky substance use, or simply accidents. One of the major issues regarding Student Trustee that I am aware of, is that historically, they tend to play to certain groups on campus. However, I wouldn’t be just a Greek Life Trustee, I wouldn’t be an Undergraduate Trustee, I would be the Student Trustee, meaning that I represent everyone on this campus, and no one gets left behind. My platform really consists of three major areas: safety, inclusion, and progress. For safety, I want to reduce student deaths, end sexual assault, and make sure that everyone on this campus has access to adequate health resources. For inclusion, I will combat racism and discrimination, and ensure an affordable education for all, but especially for minority students. For progress, I will work to resolve the scandals that have plagued our campus. Furthermore, I will ensure effective spending by the University. I will also put pressure on the State to pass a budget, finally, for higher education. I already have experience serving as Student Trustee before coming to U of I. There I helped to establish a scholarship fund for Latino students. I also worked with the Administration to implement a laptop rental program, aimed at reducing the cost of an education. Furthermore, I lobbied State Congress twice to increase the resources available for higher education in Illinois. I’m currently involved in Illinois Student Senate. There I serve as the Historian, as well as the Urbana City Council Liaison. With the Urbana City Council, I’ve been working to make sure that we have better lighting on, and around campus. If you have any ideas on how we can improve that, I would be more than happy to work with you, because it’s not just limited to Urbana. It’s in Champaign and around campus as well. Primarily, I have experience. It takes months to learn how a Board of Trustees and a College Administration works. But I’ve already been there; I’ve had the opportunity to learn all that. Besides experience, I would invest all of my passion into this position, because that is what Student Trustee demands and deserves. I would work tirelessly to ensure that all of our students’ needs are being met. As I said, I want to represent every single student on this campus. So let me know what you would like to see changed.
