Hi, I’m Cassie Bence, and I’m the president of Engineers Without Borders. Our chapter of Engineers Without Borders travels to Guatemala annually. We go in and we implement water systems. Probably the best experience ever was when we saw water come out of the tap stands. We were all just so happy, we all just started drinking the spring water. It was the craziest moment ever. But it was just so blissful and so happy. Honestly, to know that your work actually works, that all your calculations, all the time dedicated, staying up until 3 a.m. in the morning, when you should be doing homework. That all those calculations actually worked in that you brought water to someone’s house who had never seen running, potable water before. It’s one of the coolest experiences. I’m beyond happy with the journey that I’ve taken here at UWM and with Engineers Without Borders. It’s changed my life, changed my outlook on life. And now all my friends come back and look at what I’m doing, they look at UWM and they’re like, “Wow, this is honestly an amazing city. Milwaukee’s amazing, I don’t know why I left.”
